Why Doesn't Your Brand Show Up in ChatGPT? A 30-Minute AI Visibility Check

If your brand doesn't show up in ChatGPT, the cause is usually one of six things: AI bots can't access your site, your pages aren't well represented in search indexes, your content isn't in a question-and-answer format, your brand description is inconsistent, you aren't mentioned in third-party sources, or you describe yourself with a different category than the one users ask about. The 30-minute check in this article will help you find out which of these affects you.

Buyers no longer search for a product, supplier, or agency only on Google. They also ask tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity questions like "corporate web agency in Istanbul" or "secure CMS for banks." When these tools recommend a few brands and cite sources, brands that aren't on the list may never enter the decision process at all.

The good news: you don't need a large analysis project to understand why you don't appear in AI answers. You can run the check below in half an hour, in a single afternoon. If you're curious about the basics of the topic, start with our article What Is GEO?

Which lists and directories are you missing from?

1. Question test: What does AI say about your brand?

Prepare three types of questions and ask each in ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity:

  • Brand questions: "What is [brand name], what does it do?"

  • Category questions: Questions your buyer would ask without knowing you. For example, "Which agencies in Istanbul build corporate websites?"

  • Comparison questions: "[Brand name] or [competitor]?" or "What are the best options for [category]?"

In each answer, note three things: is your brand mentioned, is it described correctly, and which sources are cited in the answer? The most valuable information is the third: it shows which sites AI takes as sources.

2. Bot access: Is your site's door open?

Open the file by adding /robots.txt to the end of your site's domain and check the rules aimed at AI bots. OpenAI has bots that work for different purposes, and each is managed separately. According to OpenAI, OAI-SearchBot is used so that sites can appear in ChatGPT search results, and sites that block this bot don't appear in ChatGPT's search answers. GPTBot, on the other hand, is a separate bot used for model training. So if you don't want your content used for model training, you can block only GPTBot and still appear in ChatGPT search.

Even if your robots.txt is clean, your firewall or CDN settings may be blocking these bots. Check your bot management rules together with your IT team. OpenAI states that it can take about 24 hours for robots.txt changes to be reflected in search results.

3. Index check: Are your pages in search indexes?

Run a "site:yourdomain.com" search on Google and look at the page indexing report in Search Console. AI search features draw on current sources across the web. A site that isn't indexed in search engines, or has very few pages in the index, is also unlikely to be cited as a source in these tools. In particular, make sure your service pages, reference projects, and blog posts are in the index. Submitting your sitemap to Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools is a good start.

4. Content check: Do you answer buyers' questions?

Does your site have a page that directly answers the questions you asked in the first step? When generating answers, AI tools more easily use pages with clear definitions, comparison tables, and checklists. Giving a short, direct answer to the question in the page's first paragraph, then going into detail, and adding a frequently asked questions section at the end increases the likelihood that your content is cited. A site made up only of an "About Us" page and a list of services doesn't answer the buyer's question.

5. Brand consistency: Does everyone describe you the same way?

Put the description on your website, your LinkedIn company page, your Google Business Profile, your profiles in industry directories, and the Organization schema on your site side by side. Are the founding year, services, areas of expertise, and certifications the same everywhere? AI tools build a picture of your brand by combining information from different sources. Inconsistent information blurs that picture and can cause your brand to be described incorrectly.

6. External sources: Whose word does AI trust?

Go back to the sources you noted in the first step. Which sites are cited as sources for category questions? These are usually industry directories, "best … lists," news sites, award pages, and customer review platforms. If your competitors appear in these sources and you don't, part of the problem isn't on your site but outside it. Creating profiles in these sources, applying for awards, and being featured in industry publications are as important a part of AI visibility as the work on your own site.

What should you do after the check?

Finding

First action

Owner

AI bots are blocked

Update your robots.txt and firewall rules to allow the search bots

IT / agency

Important pages aren't in the index

Submit the sitemap, strengthen internal links, find out why pages aren't being indexed

SEO / agency

No content that answers questions

Build a content plan around buyers' questions, and give each question its own clear page or section

Marketing

Brand is described incorrectly or incompletely

Align the descriptions across all profiles, update the Organization schema

Marketing / corporate communications

Competitors are on lists, you aren't

Create profiles in industry directories, apply for awards, collect reviews

Marketing

Category mismatch

Use the terms your buyers use on your service pages

Marketing / content

Repeat the check every three months with the same questions and keep the results in a table. Because AI answers change over time, a one-off measurement can be misleading; what's really valuable is tracking the change on the same questions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which sites does ChatGPT cite as sources?

ChatGPT's search feature scans current sources on the web when generating an answer and cites the pages it used as sources. For a site to appear in these answers, it must allow access to OpenAI's search bot, OAI-SearchBot. Content that answers the question directly and is current and trustworthy has an advantage when it comes to being cited.

Is SEO enough to appear in ChatGPT?

SEO is a necessary foundation but not sufficient on its own. It's important that your pages are in the index and technically sound; however, to appear in AI answers, your content also needs to be in a question-and-answer format, your brand information needs to be consistent, and you need to be present in third-party sources. All of this work together is called GEO (Generative Engine Optimization).

Does blocking GPTBot affect visibility in ChatGPT?

According to OpenAI, GPTBot is used for model training and OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search results, and the two are managed separately. Blocking GPTBot prevents your content from being used for model training, but as long as you allow OAI-SearchBot, you can still appear in ChatGPT's search answers.

How long does it take for AI visibility to improve?

Fixes such as removing technical blockers can take effect quickly; OpenAI states that it can take about 24 hours for robots.txt changes to be reflected in search results. Work such as content production, brand consistency, and presence in external sources is a longer-term process and requires regular tracking.

How is AI visibility measured?

The most practical method is to define the 8–10 questions your buyers would ask, ask them at regular intervals in ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity, and record the results. Tracking whether your brand is mentioned, how it's described, and which sources are cited lets you see progress.
